Well, this is out of character for Sammie. She is an avid hunter and rarely does she skip an opportunity to catch it, if it's running, but after 8 years with this fabulous dog, she did something I would not have expected. She brought me little lives to figure out "now what"....With temperatures over 100 every day here in my part of Texas...the rabbits have been having their babies under the base of my trees because I water regularly. Sammie, found 3 sets of baby rabbits. Each hole was covered in dead grass and the mother's fur. She dug it all out and when the babies cried, she gently picked them up..out of their hole and went back and got all the rest and now I have 6 baby bunnies (eyes closed and not even 2 days old)..on my porch! I wonder if I put them back if their mother will have anything to do with them once she smells me on them. I am being very careful not to touch them with my hands..but using the dead grass and fur to pick them up. I will give it try, but I am thinking Sammie will just go get them again..UGH!....I know it sounds sweet what Sammie did..but if you knew this dog..she never lets a possible meal pass her by! She regularly hunts rabbits and they usually never have a chance. So, for her to do this is really odd....unless she is raising them to get bigger so she can hunt them later..Oh, Sammie!

Oh! I feel your bitter sweet situation... I have a cat like that... Her name is Nala and she too is an avid hunter but, when the babies are still fresh enough that the amniotic fluid is disguising the smell of the baby rabbits... she tries to take them as her own. Last year she brought me 3 babies but, I had no idea where she got them from. I tried to raise them but, only 1 survived until his release (I think it was a boy, anyway LOL)

Good Luck... I hope their mother takes them back for your sake!

Thanks for the comment. I did put them back, but they were gone this morning. Maybe Momma moved them. Odd, our posts have the word mother and rabbit starred out. Of course, if they do that again, you won;t have a clue what I just wrote...LOL
