Some of the myths about exercise:
1) Tossing the ball around for your dog is exercise
-- tossing the ball around is exercise - for YOU, not your dog!
2) Your dog is exercising when he runs around the yard or by just being outdoors
-- your dog is running around the yard to burn off pent up energy and frustration, and not for exercise. (this brings up whole other issue as well).
3) Having your kids play with your dog is exercise
-- see response to statement 1)
4) Taking a leisurely stroll around the block is enough
5) Only herding, working, or sporting breeds need exercise
-- All dogs need exercise. Exercise is not just for physical wellbeing (this is a human projection). Dogs need it to meet their mental, physiological, and behavioral needs as well. From the smallest toy breed to the largest Mastiff. All dogs need it, whether you like it or not. So get up, be a responsible dog ownder, exercise your dog!
Some tips on exercise:
-- based on the breed, dogs require anywhere from a half hour to 2 hours of exercise a day! (yes, a day!)
-- don't do it all in one sitting. Break up the amount per day into two or more sessions a day.
-- match your dog's natural stride and not the other way around - yes, you'll find it to be faster than your stride so be prepared, and have those jogging shoes on!
-- Avoid exercise during the hottest times of the day
-- 15 minutes of swimming equals one mile of walking
