I have a chihuahua that is slmost 2 years old and he is awful about marking his spot. We have bought some spray that you spray around the house to prevent this but nothing works. I am new to the "pet thing" but am on here all the time reading and learning new things. Today I read about a "Belly band" Can someone explain this to me or if you have other ideas for me to do with Paco so he will stop Marking his Spot. Thanks so much!!

Hi there,

I am not familiar with a belly band, but as a trainer and behaviorist I can give you some tips to help correct the behavior without having to resort to unnatural methods. The technique will require a three prong approach.

1) Use an enzymatic cleaner (no bleach or amonia) on the area. Be sure to follow the directions and spray beyond the area. Use this product BEFORE following up with any household cleansers. If he's been marking there a while, then you will probably have to use the cleaner several times before all the scent is gone form that spot. I use Nature' Miracle both at home and in our business.

2) Keep him in a crate when your not home and tethered to you when are. This way, he can't go off to mark by himself. This will also help you spot his body language of when he needs to go and you can direct him to the proper spot rather than he picking his own. If you miss his signals, quickly pick him up and take him to the designated spot. DO NOT yell at him. 3) If he's not neutured you should consider doing so. Neuturing will lessen his need to mark.

Remember, he's 2 years old. The longer he's been allowed to do a behavior, the longer it will take to correct it. Be vigilant and continue all the above steps (without fail) for at least 6 weeks. You are responsible for your dog. if you don't follow these steps and he does mark again, then it's your fault, NOT your dog's so yell at yourself and promixe that you will never, ever do that again!
