Our girl is 10 months old, we have had her for a little over a month. In this time she has been bleeding for a little over 2 weeks. Can anyone tell me how long this "heat" period lasts? & Also how often does it occur? I'm not sure if she had a period before she came to us or not. Also, how often do these "heat" periods occur? Thanks . Sakuras mom

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Domestic dogs usually come into heat sometime between 8-12 months, although some dogs have delayed up to 18 months, and usually come into heat twice a year. However, some breeds, such as the Basenji are known to only go into heat once a year. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">The "heat" period generally lasts 18-21 days, and is divided into 3 stages:</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"> </p>
Start of the heat period is indicated by puffiness of the lips of the vulva
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 2.25pt;"> </p>
Bleeding begins which may last 4-14 days - 10 days being the average. She will be highly attractive to males but she will not accept them.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"> </p>
Bleeding diminishes or ceases, the vulva attains maximum enlargement, and she will accept dogs. This is the fertile period which can last 5-12 days, with sexual desire at its height during the first 2 or 3 days.
