Hi there,

Domestic dogs usually come into heat sometime between 8-12 months, although some dogs have delayed up to 18 months. If she doesn't have her first heat period by 20 months, then consult a vet.

Do you plan to breed her? If she is not registered then I would advise you to spay her immediately. I work at a shelter, and owners who just “meant well” drop of far too many puppies on a daily basis. Besides, if she looks like a pit, and you don’t have papers, the only people most likely interested in her pups would be those same people interested in dog fighting or just want a pit to make them look cool, and macho. Do you really want her pups to end up in that kind of life?

Be blessed,

Arlene,

Thanks for offering that great advice about spaying and neutering your non-breeding animals. I hope more folks take heed to this suggestion. Thanks for sharing your experience with the other pet lovers here on WagNBrag.
