Hello WagNBraggers,
Those of you who also enjoy feeding our wild feathered friends should take note of this bit of news I stumbled across over the weekend. The peanut-related food recalls across the nation have now extended to some brands of bird food.
According to this article (www.timesfreepress.com/news/2009/mar/13/tennessee-salmonella-birds) in the Chattanooga Times-Free Press, songbirds have been dying mysteriously across several southeastern states. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has reported salmonella poisoning appears to be the culprit in the deaths of some of the dead birds studied recently. Researchers are divided on the exact source of the salmonella, but they have noted that in February a recall was issued for some brands of bird seed that were believed to be tainted with salmonella.
Here is a copy of the FDA press release on the bird food recall -- www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/scotts02_09.html
Affected brands are from The Scotts Company and include:
* Morning Song Nutty Safari Suet
* Morning Safari Woodpecker Suet
* Royal Wing Raisin Suet
* Morning Melodies Variety Suet
* Morning Songs Variety 15 pack Suet
Also, if you are concerned, wildlife agencies recommend cleaning your bird feeder with a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water), leave the feeder alone for a 1/2 hour (or consider taking it down for a few weeks) and then relocate the feeder to a new location.
Take care,
