Ichy Ears

My Mini Aussie keeps iching around his ears. He shakes his head once in a while, not much. He only scratches around his ears occasionally. I went online and checked ear mites. I looked in his ears.....no dried blood or discoloration of any kind in his ears. No redness or odor. I checked around his ears, he has no fleas. Being an aussie with thick hair, do you think that is the problem? I did find on one side hair bunch and twirled up where he got something on him. Took care of that but he still scratches both sides now and then. I dont want to pay a vet bill for nothing, however, I dont want to ignore it if it is not nothing. Also, he hasnt had a bath in over a month so I dont think its water in his ears. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much, but it sort of sounds like it might be an ear infection. That is what babies do when they have them. Is there a way you can look further down his ear canal for something that might be irritating him?
