When my dogs chew on their rawhide bones they tend to get really loose stools, especially Tank who is 5 months old. Is this normal? I don't want to not give them their bones because they love them so much, does this happen to anyone else? What can I do?

Is it a particular flavor or brand that does this? Tucker can't have things cheese flavored for some reason.

My dog loves rawhide bones and always wanting them to chew on, I picked on up often. Well, I was at a puppy playhour at a petstore near my house. I got to talking to the lady there about the types of bones I should buy for my dog. She said Rawhide is bad for your dog-period. I had no idea! She said the dont degest good in their system and just get soft and spongy in their system (I am no vet but maybe that is the cause of the stool problem). Anyway, She said the best thing you can get for your dog is 'el natural!! Beef bones, ham bones, etc. At the petstore there they sold natural bones with the flavor in it and that merro stuff that is inside. The lady said he would go nuts over the merro for awhile then chew on the bone, taking a while to chew the bone up. She was right. and the bone I got was a good 5 or 6 inches for a really good price. He went nuts over it and still, 2 weeks later, is still chewing it. Its now his fav. toy :) I was buying rawhides all the time. This one bone last a while and its healthier :)

I got to talking to a friend about 'real bones verses raw hides' and she said, having raised dogs for years, she has always given rawhides to her dogs and was told by a vet real bones - even ham or beef- could splinter. She never had any issues with rawhides. That got me to thinking I should ask my vet before listening to a petstore worker :) So my advise to you now (and should have been earlier) would be 'ask your vet' :)
