No Bones?

I know to not give a dog chicken bones. That is a no brainer, I have heard it all my life. But yesterday someone told me I couldn't give dogs a ham bone, in fact all bones can hurt a dog.
When did this happen? Why can't I give a dog a bone, or can I?

We never gave our dog ham bones because they're usually pretty salty. Pork chop bones supposedly splinter, but my stepfather (the old fashioned Kansas farmer) always snuck them to our beagle and she not only never had a problem, she lived to be 14. Beef bones seem to be the safest. I've always geven my dogs the round bone from a roast or steak and never had a problem with them.
