How long of a walk is approperiate for a standard dachshund? I've read that they need 45min of exercise a day, but I don't think walking for 45 min in one shot would be good.

We have two routes, one 15 minutes and one 30 minutes. Depending on the weather, we should take them twice a day. We have seen our doxies go all day on vacation, of course with breaks.

Depending on the size of your dog and other factors, a single 45 minute walk may not be the best way to go. Smaller dogs may tire more easily, thus breaking the walks into smaller segments might be more helpful.

Remember, also, that the walks are not only important to your dog's physical health but to his/her mental health as well. Walks can provide the dog good opportunities to socialize with you, with your neighbors, and other dogs. This is especially helpful if you feel your dog is acting bored and listless at home after being cooped inside the house all day. And remember, a bored dog is well on the way to becoming a bad dog.

Try various routes in your neighborhood to see which distances seem to work best for your four-legged friend. You will need to be the best advocate for your dog in judging its comfort and stamina.

Enjoy the walks!
