I have a long roadtrip planned (15+ hours) any tips on how to keep it happy for the dogs? I'm looking to minimize the amount of chewed up seat covers

Take a break every 2-6 hours based on what what length of car trip your dogs are used to. If they are not used to long trips, then start preparing them now by taking them for car rides with increasing durations. Do not feed them prior to travel. on the day of travel, give them enough water for one drink, then switch to ice cubes (bring some along with you). Most dogs sleep during a long drive, but if yours are anxious, you can give them over the counter calming supplements. Also, bring along some rawhide, and chew toys to keep them entertained, and bring their favorite blanket or bedding for comfort.

Peace,

I always bring an ex-pen from home so I can quickly set it up anywhere I go if my dogs have to go potty, I also travel with a first aid kit for "just in case". I bring water from home as my dogs wont usually drink strange water even if it is purified bottled water. Is your trip 15 hours one way or round trip? I would expect Chihuahuas to not eat much, drink much or potty much while they are traveling... the normal stress of traveling causes their systems to go into sort of a "Paused Mode" and the metabolism slows way down. If your dogs have not traveled this long before and if they are very small ... or young... bring some sort of sugar (Nutrical, Karo Syrup, regular sugar if that's all you have) so if they wont eat... you can help them to maintain their blood sugar.

Bring clean up supplies (garbage bag, tissue, extra bedding, etc just in case your dog gets sick from motion or has an accident.) It is not any fun to have to drive the last 10 hours of a 15 hour trip having to smell some sort of body fluid the whole way.... if you come prepared... generally they don't make a mess... if you don't come prepared ... they will all get sick or pee on something LOL.

I can babble all day about dogs so let me know if you want to hear more travelling with a small dog type tips *smile*... I have travelled with 6 to 20 dogs just about anywhere I have wanted to go for the last 20 years. Most of them do fine as long as you don't leave them in the car alone (Temps climb fast in a non-moving car.) Good Luck and have a safe journey.

Also.......ask your vet to supply you with a sedative called Acepromazine if your dog becomes anxious on car rides. If you decide to give your dog something over the counter that is normally used for humans then please BE CAREFUL on how much you give them. You can even call your vet and ask him/her what over the counter drug they recommend for your dog.

Good Luck!
