Is there anything worse that having a guest come into your home and instantly say "Oh, I see you haven't changed the litterbox in a while." Does anyone have tips on keeping the litter box from being the first thing people smell once they come inside

Any special Brands of Litter products I should get? Do those automatic cleaners really work???

Joanne says they don't. But what doe she know?

I've bought the automatic cleaners and with 2 cats I would not recommend it.

I hate to admit this but Joanne was right.

I hear ya! LOL

I use regular baking soda everytime I scoop the box. And I always preferred "Fresh Step" for freshness but also found it increased my cats frequent occurance of respiratory nasal discharge and sneezing. Also I have my thoughts about whether or not it was contributing to the hairball problem our cat had. We now use one of those recycled news paper brands ... um... can't think of the name but, it is a flushable type of litter so it is not such a big deal to scoop it out with every use. Usually odor comes from the bacteria that can grow in a litter box. It may be time to bleach that puppy out and let it completely dry before filling with a fresh litter.

As a multiple pet owner... I have also found the value of just about any brand of bacteria based, enzime action, Pet odor and stain removers. I use a brand called "Unique" when I have puppies who are potty training but really like the smell of the Petco brand of Pet Odor and Stain Remover.

Good Luck with the kitty smell... on a side note.. I live on a farm so most of the year I can leave a window open and my cats can come in and go out as needed so I do not have a litter box this time of year. I know not everyone has this option but it is really the best as far as odor control *smiles*

I worked at a rescue shelter for awhile. Unfortunately the person taking care of the cats was pretty bad about the litter boxes. When you have almost 20 kitties that can be a real problem. We discovered an "enzymatic" cleaner that worked very well. I can't remember the name of the product, but it was in a powder form. It didn't seem to harm the cats in any way, either. Their outdoor run was the worst. You know how cats are; if the box is dirty they'll find a corner. We sprinkled the powder all over the ground after cleaning up the mess, and the smell was gone in no time. I'd check the label first, though, to make sure it's ok for cats.
